Health, safety and environmental issues of nanomaterials have recently raised many concerns. In this study we evaluated the worker exposures to nanoparticles in air during production of nanocellulose. We also exposed mouse macrophages and human monocyte derived macrophages to nanocellulose in vitro and studied the viability and cytokine profile of the cells thereafter (study carried out at Finnish Institute of Occupational Health). In addition, we studied ecotoxicological effects of nanocellulose using the kinetic luminescent bacteria test with Vibrio fischeri.
