Tannins are suitable raw materials for glue applications alongside their current uses as leather dyes. The bark of Finnish softwood trees contains large amounts of water-soluble tannin-polyphenols that can be used in various adhesive applications to replace toxic and fossil chemicals. VTT is coordinating the project Sustainable binders from bark, which aims at finding applications for bark polyphenolics and improving their extraction process.
