There is room for making paper stronger by improving bonding between fibres

The strength of paper is largely controlled by the bonds between individual fibres in paper. The stronger the bonds are the stronger is the paper. Strong bonding is a key for reducing the basis weight of paper products, saving fibre raw material and reducing the energy consumption in paper and board production. Results have shown that the bonded area can actually be surprisingly low and the bonds very weak.
