Multi-functionalized paper as a material for printed electronics

Recyclable and cheap electronic components can be created by printing on paper, or even making active components of paper. This offers an alternative to electronic products made of plastics and metals that are a growing environmental problem when discarded. VTT is participating in the INNPAPER project that is developing sustainable electronics for the future.

INNPAPER (2018-2021) is a pioneering project in the field of printed electronics field that aims at designing a configurable and recyclable electronic platform based on paper.

With various treatments, cellulose in a paper can be modified to become water-repellent, electricity conducting, magnetic, and so on. In the INNPAPER project, VTT is preparing nanocellulose-based nanopaper and purposefully tailoring and exploiting its properties to be suitable as a part of electronic circuit. Nanopaper can act as a circuit board that supports and connects components such as antennas, sensors, batteries and displays.

Towards the end of the project, three demonstrators will be developed to proof the versatility of the technology. The demonstrations include smart labels for food packaging, drug and caffeine detectors, and virus and bacteria biosensors for diagnostic tests.

INNPAPER is coordinated by CIDETEC Surface Engineering in San Sebastian, Spain.
