At the Bioruukki piloting center, VTT has demonstrated continuous production of textile fibers that could replace viscose in the EU-funded project NeoCel. The fiber production was based on the BioCelSol technology. BioSelCol fibers are a promising alternative to viscose fibers.
The NeoCel project aims at developing alkaline processes for the sustainable production of high-quality textile fibers. In NeoCel, the Turkish company Söktaş prepared yarn and fabric from the produced fibers. The Romanian Katty Fashion designed and produced the prototype garments.
The BioCelSol fibers have unique properties, such as good adsorption capacity and whiteness that are beneficial for various non-woven applications. The raw material for BioCelSol fibers is wood pulp. The fibers have a significantly reduced environmental footprint, and the production process is safe to workers.
The successful development of the continuous enzymatic pre-treatment and dissolution processes are crucial steps that lead to the breakthrough for the larger scale trials. The enzymatic pretreatment step was developed in the previous TeKiDe project (see the ForestTech article), and the process for continuous dissolution of cellulosic pulp developed in the NeoCel project utilizing a mixing reactor from LIST Technology AG.
VTT´s pilot center Bioruukki in Espoo, Finland offers a unique platform for developing new technologies and piloting them at large scale. Depending on the equipment being used, the production capacity of regenerated textile fibers ranges from hundred grams to tens of kilograms per day. Several technologies can be applied in the fiber production.
