The competition over consumers' attention combined with strong trend towards sustainable bio-packaging applications are the main drivers behind the packaging related R&D at VTT. The bio-based plastics and composites are to increase their share in the packaging market replacing fossil oil based competitors. Simultaneously the competitiveness of fiber packaging materials is maintained by introducing the resource efficient foam forming technology. Broadening the use of fiber webs to markets typically monopolised by plastics can be done by a technology that brings plastic-like moldability on foam formed webs.
